P. Suppes (see 41:10) has proved that for every finite automation there exists a stimulus-response scheme which converges to the automation. A short proof is given making explicit assumptions left implicit in the original treatment. These limitations lead to the claim that the memory of stimulus-response models is limited, and that planning and motivation require hierarchical models.
