The field modulation measurement technique is currently being used to obtain accurate and complete de Haas-van Alphen (DHVA) spectra for many metals. The theory of this technique is developed and the methods used to obtain the discrimination needed to analyse the complex DHVA spectra are presented. A complete DHVA spectrometer is described including the technology needed to achieve optimum signal-to-noise ratios. © 1968 Iliffe Science and Technology Publications Limited.
