Recent theoretical and experimental results on one-dimensional magnets as realised in solids are reviewed with a particular emphasis on dynamic properties. Results are discussed for three magnetic chain substances representing different models of magnetism: (CH3)4NMnCl3 (TMMC, classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet), CsNiF3 (ferromagnetic easy plane magnet) and CuCl2 · 2 NC5H5 (CPC, S = 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet). Detailed discussions are given of short wavelength quasi spin-waves in classical chains, of the dynamic response of a S = 1 2 magnetic chain as interpreted in terms of an infrared singularity and of non-linear modes (solitons) in both easy plane and Heisenberg classical magnetic chains. Short review sections refer to NMR and ESR experiments, to the influence of interchain interactions and to impurity effects in magnetic chains. © 1979.
