Amorphous Pb5Ge3O11 is prepared by single-roller quenching. Internal vibrational modes of the GeO4(4-) tetrahedra (and the Ge2O7(6-) double-tetrahedra) are observed in the Raman spectrum from amorphous Pb5Ge3O11. The Raman spectra of the sample annealed at 410-degrees-C are different from that annealed at higher temperature. The results confirm the existence of a metastable phase in the crystallization process of amorphous Pb5Ge3O11. The Raman frequencies of stable crystalline Pb5Ge3O11 decrease with increasing annealing temperature, and this is attributed to the stress induced during crystallization.
