OXYGEN DEFICIENCY AND SUPERCONDUCTIVITY IN ND2-XCEXCUO4

The relationship between temperature and the oxygen-defect concentration in Nd2-xCexCuO4 was investigated in detail under an oxygen pressure of 10(-3) atm. The effect of the oxygen defects on superconductivity was studied for the range of Ce-content O.14 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.175. In a sample with x=O.15 or 0.16, a lesser amount of oxygen defects was needed to realize superconductivity compared with the case x=0.14. This suggests that introduction of oxygen defects works to add carriers (electrons) to the system. Oxygen defects, however, play some role in superconductivity besides carrier doping. The a-dimension of the present tetragonal system is well described by a function of the number of electrons doped i.e., oxygen-defect doping has the same effect on a as Ce-doping does.
