The products of the reaction of sucrose with dichlorodimethyl- and dichlorodiphenyl-silane have been modified with water, methanol, and ammonia. Because of the complexity of the resultant polymeric materials, the reactions of derivatives of the model compound, tetrahydro-2-hydroxymethylpyran, were investigated under similar conditions. The occurrence, with sucrose, of analogous reactions to those demonstrated for the model compounds is shown to be consistent with the nature of the polymeric products obtained.
