INHIBITION OF L-ALANINE TRIGGERED BACILLUS-CEREUS-T SPORE GERMINATION AND OUTGROWTH BY FATTY-ACIDS AND GLYCERYL MONODODECANOATE

Germination of Bacillus cereus T spores in L-alanine solutions was inhibited totally by lauric (0.25 mM) and oleic (0.885 mM) acids and partially by linoleic acid (0.71 mM), linolenic acid (0.36 mM) and glyceryl monododecanoate (0.36 mM). Inhibition of spore germination was reversible. Lauric or oleic acid inhibited commitment to germinate possibly by interference with germinant diffusion to the binding site(s). These two fatty acids also blocked reactions of postcommitment to germinate including loss of heat resistance. All fatty compounds inhibited outgrowth of fully germinated spores. This was accompanied by inhibition of oxygen consumption by glyceryl monododecanoate and linolenic acid.
