Mossbauer measurements were performed in the temperature range from 77 to 250 K. The temperature-dependent Fe-57 Mossbauer recoil-free fraction in the high-T(c) superconducting phase of the Bi-system displayed evidence of softening in lattice vibrations. Such softening localized in the Cu-O layers as a precursor effect to the onset of the superconducting transition occurs at about 150 K. These results show that the instability related to the softening of phonon modes cannot be overlooked for this high-T(c) oxide superconductor.
