A STUDY OF THE PHOTOPHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF VARIOUS TRIARYL-2-PYRAZOLINES IN SOLUTION AND MICROCRYSTALLINE FORM

The photophysical properties of various triaryl-2-pyrazolines were studied in solution and microcrystalline form. In dilute solution triplet states can only be observed in laser flash photolysis studies following sensitization with a triplet energy donor, whereas for microcrystalline samples use of diffuse reflectance enables triplet states to be observed following direct excitation. This illustrates that when the quantum yield of triplet state production is low the use of diffuse reflectance laser flash photolysis enables substantial triplet absorption to be observed from microcrystals. No marked phase dependences of fluorescence properties are observed but fluorescence lifetimes, where measurable, are shown to be somewhat larger in crystals. Quantum yields of fluorescence were measured and are high, in the range 0.6 - 1.0, and independent of wavelength for all three substituted pyrazolines. © 1990.
