MEASUREMENT OF DIFFUSION-COEFFICIENTS OF POLYMER-SOLUTIONS USING THE ULTRA-CENTRIFUGE

A diffusion experiment in the synthetic boundary cell of an ultracentrifuge yields reproducible values of the diffusion coefficient. For poor and intermediate solvents, these values (uncorrected for the effect of polymer concentration) lead to reasonable values of the Flory-Mandelkern invariant β. Hence, the method in combination with the measurement of either the intrinsic viscosity or the sedimentation coefficient may yield a good estimate of molecular weight. However, for good solvents (highly nonideal solutions), the effect of the polymer concentration cannot be neglected. © 1979, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
