摘要
Novel methods of preparation of strong poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels without utilization of chemical crosslinking or reinforcing agents are reviewed. Aqueous poly (vinyl alcohol) solutions exposed to several freezing-thawing cycles lead to such materials. The process of reinforcement of these hydrogels is a densification of the macromolecular structure. This is probably due to the microparticle-microgel formation within the hydrogel or to microcrystalline structural formations or to partial phase separation. The densification process is more prominent for gels that are exposed to up to five freezing-thawing cycles. Important biomedical and pharmaceutical applications of these gels are reviewed.
