A neutron diffraction investigation of the fluorite-type Sr1-xBixF2+x (0 greater-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-similar-to 0.50) solid solution has revealed th, existence of three F', F" and F'", interstitial fluoride ions. The anionic distribution between normal and interstitial sites has been determined as a function of x. A clustering process has been proposed in Sr1-xBixF2+x on the basis of neutron diffraction results and of the composition dependence of electrical properties. It consists in a progressive transformation with increasing x of 3:2:3:0 clusters into "1:0:3:0" clusters.
