摘要
Studying the speed of performing very simple mental operations has become important for the advancement of theories of intelligence. Processing speed is typically measured with electronic presentation of stimuli, and reaction times are measured in milliseconds. The apparatuses and experimental paradigms being used are thought to have several advantages over traditional paper-and-pencil psychometric tasks. The present study was conducted to determine the relationship of reaction time measures to paper-and-pencil measures of processing speed, and the relationship of both measures to general intelligence. The results showed that it is possible to separate motor components from cognitive components on both types of tasks, and that measures of speed on the two types of tasks are significantly correlated. The paper-and-pencil tasks were more strongly related to general intelligence than were the reaction time tasks. © 1991.
