DETERMINATION OF FANO FACTOR IN GERMANIUM AT 77 DEGREES K

The Fano factor in germanium at liquid nitrogen temperature has been determined through the observed line widths in pulse-height spectra from Ge(Li) detectors upon which gamma rays were incident with energies of 122, 356, 1173 and 1333 keV. Instrumental contributions to the line width were measured with a pulse generator and corrected for; the variation of charge collection with applied bias was determined and Fano factor measurements were made in a region where 100% collection efficiency was evidently obtained. A value for the Fano factor of 0.132±0.008 has been obtained for the energy range studied. © 1969.
