A new pumping scheme for quasi-three-level lasers is presented and benefits such as increased pump absorption, reduced up-conversion and better thermal management are discussed. The scheme is tested on a typical quasi-three-level laser; Tm:Ho:YAG pumped by a titanium sapphire laser. The dependence of output power on crystal temperature and pump wavelength is investigated. In a 3 mm long crystal over 95% of the incident pump power is absorbed and a maximum slope efficiency of 54% at 19-degrees-C has been measured.
