Treatment of t-Bu3SiNHLi with an equimolar amount of VOCl3 yields (t-Bu3SiN)(t-Bu3SiNH)VCl2 (1), which on treatment with PCl5 gives (t-Bu3SiN)VCl3 (2). Alkylation of 1 with MgMe2(dioxane), Mg(CH2-t-Bu)2, or Mg(CH2SiMe3)2 yields crystalline (3a,b) or waxy (3c) complexes (t-Bu3SiN)(t-Bu3SiNH)VR(Cl) (R = Me (3a), CH2-t-Bu (3b), CH2SiMe3 (3c)), which show pronounced thermal stability. Use of excess LiMe results in the first structurally characterized alkylvanadium(V) complex, Li[(t-Bu3SiN)2VMe2] (4), containing a ligand-shielded solvent-free lithium ion, which is coordinated only to the two imido nitrogen atoms. © 1990, American Chemical Society.
