2-DIMENSIONAL ELECTRON-GAS IN SURFACE RYDBERG STATES - LIMITS SET BY AUGER DECAY

摘要
The creation of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) by pumping Rydberg surface states on a metal surface with a laser is proposed and analyzed. Assuming Auger electron transitions between surface electron states to dominate the relaxation dynamics of the surface Rydberg electrons, maximum density n(s) and lifetime tau of this 2DEG are calculated. On Cu(111) values of n(s) above 10(11) cm-2 and of tau beyond 100 femtoseconds may be established. Conditions for optimal substrate are formulated.
