LOW POTENTIAL ANODIC POLYMERIZATION OF BENZENE IN METHANESULFONIC AND TRIFLUOROMETHANESULFONIC ACID-SOLUTIONS

By using three-component mixtures: benzene, strong acid, and trifluoroacetic acid it is possible to electropolymerize benzene in a single-phase medium of strong acidity at about 1.3 V for methanesulfonic acid and 1 V for triflic acid (CF3SO3H). In the latter case, voltammograms with sharp peaks could be observed; these gradually convert to the usual ones with broad redox peaks. Such a poly(p-phenylene) behaviour in superacid media can be attributed to the formation of linear chains with a narrow distribution of the degree of polymerization.
