PHOTOCHEMISTRY OF SULFIDE DIMER CATIONS IN CLUSTERS OF DIMETHYL SULFIDE

摘要
We report on wavelength-dependent photochemistry in dimethyl sulfide (DMS) cluster ions formed by resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization and by electron-impact ionization. DMS cluster ionization leads to a stable dimer cation three-electron sulfur-sulfur bond with strong visible absorptions. Excitation in this spectral region promotes photoreaction to a cyclic C2H3S+ structure (thiirenium ion). Excitation at shorter wavelengths produces entirely different products. The photoreactions resemble solution-phase chemistry, whereas the electron-impact-induced cluster reactions are similar to gas-phase ion-molecule chemistry.
