Previous investigators have correlated the Snoek relaxation strength per interstitial atom with polycrystalline grain size and have inferred the existence of wide immobilization or depletion zones about grain boundaries. Arguments are given against either of these possibilities. Experiments are described which show conclusively that for a variety of iron specimens the variations of the relaxation strength per interstitial atom correlate with the elastic modulus rather than with the grain size. Therefore, these variations in relaxation strength are attributed to variations in polycrystalline texture. © 1969.
