Relaxation of Hg(6(3)P(0)) by NH3 in ternary collisions

Relaxation of Hg(6(3)P(0)) by NH3 was shown to occur in biomolecular encounters, and also in termolecular encounters with an inert gas, M. viz. Hg(6(3)P(0)) + NH3 + M + HgNII3 + M. The principal fate of the HgNH3 is the spontaneous emission of radiation. The biomolecular and termolecular rate coefficients were measured at 295 degrees K, with M = N-2, Ar and He, Quantum yields, Phi, for the formation of Hg(6(3)P(0)) and rate coefficients for deactivation were recorded in H-2, NO, CO, CO2, N2O, O-2, C2H4, C2H6, C3H8, NH3 and H2O (Phi only).
