AN ATTRITION INDEX TO ASSESS FINES FORMATION AND PARTICLE-SIZE REDUCTION IN TAPPED AGGLOMERATED FOOD POWDERS

摘要
The feasibility of characterizing the attrition process in agglomerated food powders by using a novel attrition index was investigated. The index, where the effects of shattering and erosion are considered, was defined as the ratio between weight fraction of fines and the ASTM size stability index. Samples of two commercial brands of instant coffee and skim milk were exposed to attrition by tapping, and changes in the particle size distribution were monitored by sieving. Results show that the kinetics of the process, in the case of the products studied, can be described with the attrition index following a power law model.
