The angular spectrum representation of a scalar wave field separates naturally into two parts-the contribution of homogeneous plane waves and the contribution of inhomogeneous (or evanescent) plane waves. Exact diffraction formulae are derived for the separate contributions for an arbitrary incident field, when the field is monochromatic, and also when the field has arbitrary time-dependence.
