摘要
Corrugated rail treads were examined by surface analysis. The results led to the conclusion that the vibration of the wheel-tread system leads to different amounts of load at different areas of the surface. As a consequence there are areas with higher loads, higher deformation, higher hardening and higher wear resistance: the "hills". Neighbouring areas have lower deformation: the "valleys". At first the valleys are deepened by wear, which is followed by corrosion. The surface white layer appears to be not martensite but instead finely divided cementite.
