Ammonia, hydrazine, and a range of simple amines were intercalated into α-Zr(HPO4)2·H2O. The phases that formed have been characterized by X-ray diffraction and 31P MAS NMR studies. The position and intensity of the isotropic 31P resonances were found to depend on the type of amine present in the phase. 31P chemical shifts changed with deprotonation and with differences in the hydrogen-bonding environment about the acidic phosphate. With intercalation, linear alkyl chain primary amines produced downfield shifts of the phosphate groups while secondary and tertiary amines produced upfield shifts. Water content was also found to have an effect on the 31P chemical shifts. © 1990 American Chemical Society.
