METABOLISM OF 2-AMINOETHYLPHOSPHONATE LIPIDS IN TETRAHYMENA PYRIFORMIS

The rapid incorporation of [14C]palmitic acid or [3H]chimyl alcohol into the choline phospholipids of Tetrahymena pyriformis is followed by a gradual transfer of the labeled glyceride moiety from that fraction to 2-aminoethylphosphonate or its precursor. Thus it appears that choline phosphatide is the lipid participant postulated to take part in carbon-phosphorus bond formation. The phosphonolipids, once formed, resist attack by endogenous lipolytic enzymes of Tetrahymena. The phosphonolipids and the structurally similar lipid, phosphatidylethanolamine, are therefore synthesized and degraded at rates which differ markedly. © 1969.
