OBSERVATION OF NH(X3-SIGMA-, A 1-DELTA) FROM THE H+NCO REACTION

The H + NCO→NH + CO reaction has been investigated in a molecular experiment in a beam-gas scattering arrangement by laser fluorescence detection of the NH product in its X 3Σ- and a 1Δ electronic states. These states are formed almost exclusively in their ground v = 0 vibrational levels. The electronic state branching ratio of a 1Δ to X 3Σ- is determined to equal 0.0023 ± 0.0009:1. The total reaction cross section for H + NCO versus that for H + N3 was estimated to be 1.2 ± 0.3:1. The low formation rate for the NH (a 1Δ) product reflects the slight endothermicity of the NH (a 1Δ) + CO reaction pathway. The implication of these experimental results for the dynamics of the H + NCO reaction, in particular the mechanism of formation of the NH (X 3Σ-) product, as well as a comparison with the H + N3 reaction, are discussed. © 1990.
