DOES SEX-ROLE BEHAVIOR INFLUENCE THE WAY TEACHERS EVALUATE STUDENTS

120 male and 120 female teachers enrolled in university education courses (mean number of years taught, 6.7) read and rated a description of either a male or female college student who demonstrated either masculine or feminine sex-role behavior and whose major course of study was either English or physics. They then read and rated a written essay purported to have been written by the student. Male and female teachers differed in their perceptions of sex-role behavior and in their evaluations of student written performance. Student gender interacted with sex-role behavior in moderating teachers' perceptions of student sex-role behavior. Student gender also influenced the way teachers rated student written performance. Student sex-role behavior influenced not only teachers' perceptions of students but also evaluation of student written performance.
