The laser two-photon ionization technique has been applied to several aromatic molecules on the surface of water in ambient air. The observed signal consists of a fast component and a slow component. The fast component was assigned to photoelectrons, which were ejected from aromatic molecules via two-photon excitation-ionization processes. The slow component was assigned to oxygen anions, which were produced by an oxygen molecule capturing an ejected electron. The photoionization charge was linearly proportional to the solute concentration when the incident angle of the laser beam was large. Less soluble molecules displayed a larger signal. The detection limit of pyrene was 9 ng/dm3 (ppt), which was close to the detection limit obtained in hexane solution. This technique is found to be sensitive, convenient, and applicable in ambient air.
