TEMPERATURE-DEPENDENT ABSOLUTE FLUORESCENCE QUANTUM YIELD OF C-60 MULTILAYERS

Laser-induced fluorescence techniques were used to examine the fluorescence quantum yield of C60 multilayers on Al2O3 (0001) from 28 to 350 K in ultra-high vacuum. The C60 fluorescence quantum yield was q = 6.2 x 10(-4)+/-1.3 x 10(-4) at 28 K. This absolute value was determined by comparison with the known fluorescence quantum yield of 9, 10-diphenylanthracene. The C60 fluorescence quantum yield decreased progressively with increasing temperature from 28 to 350 K. The temperature-dependent changes in the quantum yield were reversible. No fluorescence was detected at surface temperatures greater than 350 K. The temperature dependence was attributed to either enhanced internal conversion or increased intersystem crossing.
