NONMARINE CRETACEOUS STRATIGRAPHY OF EASTERN CHINA

Nonmarine Cretaceous deposits are found extensively throughout eastern China. They are often of great thickness and containing a rich fossil biota and significant oil, coal and nonmetallic mineral resources. The boundary between the Lower and Upper Cretaceous is defined for NE China, and a nonmarine stratigraphic sequence consisting of 14 formations is established. A stratigraphic correlation is provided of nonmarine Cretaceous rocks (acid volcanics, red beds with frequent evaporites) in the coastal regions of SE China. An outline is given of the nonmarine Cretaceous stratigraphy of the interior regions of the SE province. Recent radiometric dates confirm the presence of a hiatus within the Upper Jurassic of the coastal areas of SE China. © 1994 Academic Press Limited.
