The nature of the passive film formed on the surface of AISI 304 stainless steel in a borate-boric acid medium (pH approximately 9.0), at temperatures between 8-degrees-C and 70-degrees-C has been investigated, by means of photoelectrochemistry, electrochemical impedance and Auger analysis. An apparent activation energy has been determined for the passive current. Values of bandgap, flatband potential and space charge thickness have been obtained. An Arrhenius type of relationship was detected between the density of charge carriers and T, leading to an activation energy of 0.1 eV, which was associated with the ionization energy of the donor species. This characterization of the film is completed by a quantitative determination of its chemical composition and thickness which were derived from Auger depth profile analysis.
