摘要：

Correlation functions and the Cotton-Mouton coefficient are calculated for liquid crystals beyond the mean-field approximation. My results in the context of a first-order transition are compared with the recent experiments of Keyes and Shane for N-[p-methoxybenzylidine]-p-butylaniline (MBBA) connecting with the possible tricritical nature of the nematic-isotropic transition. © 1979 The American Physical Society.
