EFFECT OF BORATE ON COLORIMETRIC DETERMINATIONS OF CARBOHYDRATES BY PHENOL-SULFURIC ACID METHOD

摘要
Absorbance of solutions containing hexoses is reduced slightly, and of pentoses or pentosans is lowered significantly, by the presence of borate in solutions tested by the phenol-sulfuric acid procedure. The absorbance-lowering effect is related to borate concentration. The presence of borate has no effect on wavelength of maximum absorbance, and lowers height of maximum absorbance by interference with formation of intermediate furan derivatives rather than with chromogen formation. © 1968.
