TARGET-ELECTRONIC-STRUCTURE DEPENDENCE IN HIGHLY-CHARGED-ION-C-60 COLLISIONS

Results of two different theoretical models for the electronic structure of C-60 targets were used in order to predict the population dynamics of target and projectile levels, charge-state evolutions, projectile electron emission, and the projectile deflection function in soft collisions with 80 keV Ar8+ ions. The calculations were performed within a previously developed semiclassical overbarrier model for nondestructive, long-range charge exchange. The two target models, a local-density-approximation-type, spherical-shell approach and our self-consistent Dirac-Fock-Slater calculation, lead to charge states and deflection functions that agree at the 10% per cent level.
