INVESTIGATION INTO THE EFFECTS OF OXYGEN ON THE MAGNETIC AND STRUCTURAL-PROPERTIES OF NI-FE THIN-FILMS EVAPORATED ONTO GLASS SUBSTRATES

The differences in the magnetic and structural properties of NiFe films prepared in an ultrahigh vacuum and of films prepared in an ordinary vacuum are usually attributed to differences in the levels of oxygen in the systems. Our detailed investigation revealed that changes in the magnetic properties occurred when the oxygen partial pressure reached about 10-10 Torr during deposition (the deposition rate was 400 Å min-1), increasing the values of the coercivity and angular dispersion. These changes were related to changes in Hoffmann's structure constant S. The changes in S were attributed to the variations in stress level which occurred with the changes in the partial pressure of oxygen. The results of this investigation are reported and are used to explain the experimental differences between films deposited in an ultrahigh vacuum and those deposited in an ordinary vacuum. © 1979.
