Colonoscopy can add information to both the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, but the indications are relatively limited. There are some fully accepted indications and others that become useful under special circumstances in the patient's course. Colonoscopy, with the capability for mucosal visualization, and biopsy may assist in the differential diagnosis between various colitides and be aware of the problems in interpretation of biopsy reports, which are usually nonspecific.
