TAU LIFETIME WITH THE IMPACT PARAMETER DIFFERENCE METHOD

The impact parameter difference method for measuring the tau lifetime has been used since 1990 in the ALEPH and DELPHI collaborations at LEP. This paper is mainly devoted to the description of the method. The most recent preliminary results, tau(tau) = 288.1 +/- 5.4 (stat.) +/- 1.2 (syst.) fs obtained by the ALEPH collaboration on 1992 data and tau(tau) = 292.8 +/- 5.0 (stat.) +/- 3.7 (syst.) fs from the combined DELPHI analysis of 1992-93 data, are still statistically limited, therefore a global error on the tau lifetime of less than 1% per experiment should be attainable with this method at the end of LEP-1 running.
