THE FORMATION OF CURLED CONCENTRIC-SHELL CLUSTERS IN BORON-NITRIDE UNDER ELECTRON-IRRADIATION

摘要
It is found that under intense electron irradiation in transmission electron microscopes boron nitride, as well as carbon, shows a tendency towards curling and forming concentric shells in onion-like structures. In boron nitride spherical basal planes develop which, in contrast to carbon, are not completely closed. It is suggested that the formation of spherical clusters under electron irradiation is a general phenomenon in substances which crystallize in the graphite type and that energy minimization cannot serve as a satisfactory explanation for the formation mechanism.
