The structural modulation in Bi2Sr2.4Y0.6Cu2O8+gamma has been studied by single-crystal neutron diffraction. The observed structure, closely related to Bi2(Sr, Ca)3Cu2O8+gamma, displays characteristic Bi-O-Bi-ribbons in which an extra oxygen (gamma > 0) is inserted after each modulation period. For the present sample the period amounts to approximately 4.25a (a=5.461 angstrom, b=5.456 angstrom, c=30.48 angstrom). In contradistinction to the calcium analog there are other extra oxygen atoms between neighboring ribbons in the bismuth plane, spaced with the same period. The increased oxygen content given by gamma=0.5 (1) compensates the effect of the trivalent yttrium substitution for the alkali earths.
