A method has been developed for continuous determination of the concentration of one amino acid in a mixture, using electrodialysis combined with a flow-injection system. Using a non-specific L-amino acid oxidase column and electrochemical detection of enzymatically produced hydrogen peroxide, the concentration of a particular amino acid in a mixture could be determined by first performing a separation step using an electrodialysis unit. Using the separation of arginine as a model system, it was possible to determine the concentration of this amino acid in the presence of two or three of a group of nine amino acids.
