摘要：

This paper seeks to clarify the concept of sustainable development and examine the ways in which it is being or might be pursued. There will be many routes to sustainable development which will need coordination. The concept has great value, but implementation has so far been disappointing. If it is to be achieved, a substantial portion of the world's population will have to change their attitude and behaviour.
