IR-SPECTRA OF CO2 AND N2O ADSORBED ON C-60 AND OTHER CARBON ALLOTROPES - A COMPARATIVE-STUDY

IR spectra of CO2 and N2O adsorbed on C-60, graphite and diamond films were recorded at low temperatures. The IR spectra of adsorbed C0(2) and N2O indicated that only one adsorption site was present on the three allotropes. When CO2 was adsorbed on C-60 and graphite, removal of degeneracy of the v(2) vibration mode occurred. The absorption band appeared as a doublet. When N2O was adsorbed on the three adsorbents, there was no removal of degeneracy of the v(2) vibration mode, which appeared as a single band. Large spectral shifts of the v(3) band and longer desorption times were recorded for both CO2 and N2O adsorbed on C-60, relative to the small spectral shifts and shorter desorption times recorded on graphite and diamond. These results indicate a strong interaction of these adsorbates with C-60 compared to the other carbon allotropes.
