MODE-LOCKING WITH SPATIAL-DISPERSION IN THE GAIN MEDIUM

The process of laser mode-locking with spatial dispersion of the radiation in the gain medium is analyzed. It is shown by a simple model in the frequency description that simultaneous phase matching of the axial modes in both space and time may be accomplished. The reduction of the mode competition due to the spatial dispersion favors the mode-locking process and leads to broadening of the locked spectrum compared with the case of no dispersion. After space-to-time transformation this effect allows one to obtain shorter pulses than those produced by standard techniques.
