A thermally stimulated spectroscopic approach is described for remote thickness evaluation of a crude oil film on water, with possible applications to airborne monitoring of oil spills. The oil-water medium is irradiated by a laser pulse which is partially absorbed within the oil film. The corresponding temperature rise of the different material components is probed by two infrared detectors operating over different spectral bands, and a correlation is established between a combination of the detector outputs and the oil film thickness in the range below 1 mm. Computations and experimental results are presented for different wavelengths of excitation and detection.
