4-Aryl-l,4-dihydropyridines are an important class of drugs which are used in the treatment of various cardiovascular disease states.3-5 It is surprising that for a group of compounds which has been so intensively studied, relatively few useful syntheses thereof are known,6,7 especially for those which bear substituents other than hydrogen atoms or methyl groups at C-2 and C-6. This publication shows that 4-arylglutarimides, upon reaction with the Vismeier-Haack reagent, are converted into 1,4-dihydro-2,6-dichloro-4-arylpyridine-3,5-dicarboxaldehydes, which may show promise as precursors of still other novel dihydropyridine derivatives. © 1990, American Chemical Society.
