FIBROUS AND ORIENTED QUANTUM DOTS - SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION

Oriented and fibrous cadmium nanocrystals were directly made by organometallic chemical synthesis. By delicately adjusting the capping of the dots, a heat-to-tail organization during solvent evaporation leads to a new fibrous polymeric material. These aligned dot polymers can be processed to make powder, free standing dots or optically transparent and anisotropic films. Optical spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy have been used to evaluate the structure and morphology of this new type of polymer. The monodispersity of the sample explains the sharpness of the optical bands and the presence of other discrete high-energy electronic transitions.
