ELECTROTRANSPORT OF CARBONATE AND HYDROGEN CARBONATE IONS IN ANION-EXCHANGE MEMBRANES

摘要
Electrodialysis of CO32- and HCO3- ions from aqueous solution is studied under galvanostatic conditions using a laboratory cell and two different commercial ion exchange membranes: AMV Selemion and RAI 5035. When the two ions are simultaneously present in the aqueous solution the rate of penetration of CO32- into the membrane is greatly lowered by the competition with HCO3-. This effect is ascribed to an acid-base reaction taking place inside the membrane phase and, presumably, due to dissociation of water. © 1990.
