OBSERVATION OF THE COULOMB BLOCKADE OF COOPER PAIR TUNNELING IN SINGLE JOSEPHSON-JUNCTIONS

摘要
Measurements of single aluminum tunnel junctions of small area (0.01-mu-m2), which have high-resistance leads located very close to the tunnel junction, show evidence for the Coulomb blockade of Cooper pair tunnelling. The blockade appears as a voltage, below which a Josephson-like current is suppressed. This blockade voltage increases as the Josephson coupling energy is reduced by an external magnetic field. Finite-temperature effects on the I-V curve are seen down to about 100 mK. These observations can be explained within the scope of the semiclassical theory of tunnelling in ultrasmall junctions, where the effect of the electromagnetic environment is considered.
