THERMOANALYTICAL AND SPECTRAL STUDY OF BENZODIAZEPINS .1. LORAZEPAM

Thermoanalytical and spectral studies have been performed on commercial lorazepam (a) and its solvates obtained after recrystallisation at 20-degrees-C in methanol (b), propanol (c), ethyl acetate (d) and chloroform (e). The solvates' stoichiometry has been determined by thermogravimetry to be b, 3-2; c, 1-1, d, 3-1, and e, 3-2 and confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance for b, c, and e. Their melting points (degrees-C), measured by differential scanning calorimetry, are b, 176.1 +/- 0.5; c, 178.9 +/- 0.8; d, 183.0 +/- 0.6; and e, 178.9 +/- 0.6). These differ from the value for a (183.1 +/- 0.6), confirming lorazepam polymorphism.
